I bought this mask at Tannersville Antiques in Tannersville, NY. To my knowledge, it is the only one of its kind. I wish I had more information on who made it and why. Since I don't, I get to make all that up...
This mask was crafted long ago in Egypt as a physical representation of the "benevolent demon" force that acts upon this world from behind the scenes. Its acts can only be performed by a demon due to their innate ability to deal with the uncomfortable. We all know there is "necessary evil" in the world that destroys but also gives rise to things greater than how they were before. Think evolution. The benevolent demon is the one in control of delivering this necessary evil. Not with the simple intention of creating chaos, as some might conclude. But for creating purpose, strength, and helping to continue turning the wheels of life that drive progress. Shallow creatures are unable to see the entire scope of the benevolent demon's plan and remain horrified of him. The benevolent demon meets that horror with a smile and a laugh because he knows the true future outcomes his actions will bring. And he also knows that they will never, can never understand.
The irony of his situation is pretty hysterical...
